TV Show Experience
I chose to record the show "Haters." This was the first time I watched the show and I actually hadn't even heard of it before. When looking at it with no sound I saw Snooky from Jersey Shore on there. I thought she was going on a date with this guy and it looked like she was saying nice things to him because she didn't make any frowns or scrunced up faces or anything. After looking at it with sound I found out she was saying some ugly things to him. She wasn't there to go out with him either. She was there because the guy was telling everyone she was a drunk and she was crazy and she wanted him to get to know her better. I also noticed when I watched it with sound that the sound effects they were playing emphasized the point the characters were making. I learned that I would like to be able to have that face that snooky had when she was talking. It wasn't a face that went either way. I want to be able to remain neutral when communicating so that people won't feel like I am judging or choosing sides. An aha moment I had was when watching one of the characters on the show who was the mother of the guy. I noticed that I do raise my eyebrows and make faces when someone is trying to hold a conversation with me if I question what they are telling me. I also wrinkle my nose when someone is asking me to do something that I don't really want to do. They don't even have to ask me anything because my body language is saying it all. Watching the mother reminded me of myself when I talk to people.

Susann,
ReplyDeleteWasn't this assignment interesting? Your point about raising your eyebrows and wrinkling your nose is making me reflect on my facial expressions. I'm going to pay attention to those this week and see what happens. Thank you for the comments.
Susann,
ReplyDeleteI found the assignment very intersting as well. It's amazing how we have to pay attention to all the little details without sound or verbalizations. It really made clear for me as well how important body language is.
Susann,
ReplyDeleteI used to be an OR nurse. We always had a mask covering our face, and we had to be quiet so our eyes told it all. That habit has carried over and I have had children laugh at me because I make such expressive faces. I can't hide what I'm thinking, my body language is loud and clear!
Also, please don't think that everyone from New Jersey is like Snooky!!!! I am from NJ and don't know anyone like her or like the others on that show. I'm embarassed by it's representation of NJ.
I liked the assignment as well. I am the type of person who others can tell how I am feeling just by looking at my facial expressions. I was born in New Jersey and lived there until I was 11 years old and I know the people there do not act the way that like they do on Jersey Shore.
ReplyDeleteSussan,
ReplyDeleteIsn't amazing what body language tells us? Now that I am hearing impaired I find that I focus on body language and detect things others miss. I do think I miss innuendos and tones that people use to communicate emotions behind words tho, and sometimes that makes me appear as if I am heartless or have no sense of humor.

It's funny how people can misinterpret things when they are just seeing things and are not fully hearing the conversation. This is how many things get misunderstood. Body language is very important it can say many things. Now with this class I have come to be more conscious of my body language.
