Exploring Roles in the ECE Community-State and Local

Three organizations that peaked my interest were: 1.Virginia Head Start Organization Their mission is: As a professional organization, the Virginia Head Start Association is dedicated to advocacy, training and providing support which enhances and fosters growth of our individual members, member agencies, partners and others who impact the lives of children and families. This organization appealed to me because Head Start is one of my favorite programs! A job they had open that seemed interesting was: Head Start State Collaboration Office Director The description said The incumbent will direct the Head Start State Collaboration Office with the goal of improving the quality of child care in Virginia, while fostering collaborative working relationships between Head Start programs and state agencies, which includes the VA Department of Social Services. I love working with Social Service Departments in our area, so I am sure I would love to do this job. 2. Virginia Department of Education- This appealed to me because i would like to be part of the organization that makes most decisions for our schools. A job they had open that looked interesting was Assessment Specialist/Education Coordinator. The job was only part time 30 hours per week. The pay was pretty good though. $19.91-40.00 per hour! That definitely caught my eye. The job description listed several different aspects of developing testing materials as the main duty of the position. 3.VAECE is the last organization I chose. This was appealing to me because I have attended many of their conferences and I share their purpose. The Purpose of this organization is to serve and act on behalf of the needs and rights of all young children and to work with all groups serving the interest and well being of young children in Virginia. They currently did not have any jobs available. However, they mentioned a volunteer board of directors and presidents of local chapters. I feel like I could do one of those jobs. I could do that in addition to my regular job. I plan to look more into the local chapter part of this because we do not have a local Chapter in our area. Maybe I will be the beginning of getting one started in our area.

  1. Susann,
There appears to be a variety of opportunities within Virginia. All sound interesting and appealing especially the Assessment Specialist/Education Coordinator. You do need to keep checking the job postings. Seems like a full job in itself.

  2. Susann,

I think you will do great at getting a chapter started in your area! If you have the passion and the drive I think you can do it, plus you have the experience from the conferences you attended.

I think we need more people who are passionate and educated in early childhood to be in the positions making differences, and decisions for our schools and programs.

  3. Susann,

The job with Head Start interests me too as I also find Head Start to be one of my favorite programs. I like it's purpose and it's success for both children and adults involved. I was lucky to be able to visit a school one of our Walden classmates teaches at, and when I was there I felt envious of those teachers and children. I would love to get experience teaching in Head Start first, but being a Director for the program does sound like an ideal goal.

  4. Susan,

I really ennjoyed reading your post. It was refreshing to see the variety in the agencies in Virginia that work with young children and their families. I also have a soft spot for the Head Start organization and would like to work in a federal position with the company if possible one day in the near future. I also like the fact that you are willing to start a branch of the VAECE in your area in an effort to bring this program to your area. Great post!

  5. Wow. I see that the opportunities in VA is quite interesting and available. It is also enlighten to hear the federal support and the position that head starts hold. When I first began my journey I wanted to be a director however the more and mroe closer I get towards the end I see the diversity that is offered.

  6. In your post you discuss the various opportunities to work with head-start programs and working with early childhood programs within your area of Virginia. The concept of professionalism is important in the education system to build communication skills among the teachers and administrators. The understanding that the workers have one goal of helping the young learners build skills at an early age. Here in my community we have just recently implemented the babyface program that reaches out to the children in the community and help them to transition into the school systems.
