Personal Research Journey

I have chosen to do Parental Involvement as a research simulation. I am not exactly sure how I can narrow it to one specific subject to convey what I want. If anyone could help me tailor it to be more specific, I would be grateful. I am open to any suggestions. Sometimes, I have trouble putting in to words what I would like to say. I chose this because I have seen many children grow from my preschool program moving into middle school and beyond. I have seen differences in the children who had parents directly involved with them than those who did not. Some were in the custody of a foster family, or group home, or even an orphanage. I also have seen children that were minimally taken care of by both parents. These children show different signs of development. The children of parents that were more involved developed better socially, academically, and had better behavior. The children of the parents who barely took care of them didn’t fare so well. They were in trouble, failed and had to repeat grades. Some are even in trouble with the law now. I feel like this is a credible research project. If we could get the information out to people, maybe parents would spend more time with their children. Thus, creating a better outcome for their lives and creating better communities. I feel like this is an advocacy issue and I could use the research as a tool to help advocate for parents to be more involved.

  1. Aloha Susan,

I like your topic on Parent Involvement; perhaps you may consider doing research on the impact or effects of parent involvement on children's life. You have seen the difference on children with parent that were involved and those who were not involved.

Today's mother and father are doing a lot of things in order to survive this economy. They work, go to school, and maintain a home. Times have definitely changed than a decade ago or more. Parents have less time and the entire approached of involving parents in their child care or school program has to be modified.

Parents, teachers, and other staff are busy people. Parents used to be present at school to be involved, probably you can include in your research an experiment wherein you modify the way get families or parent involved. You can probably consider networking such as face book, or using technology to get them be involved.
I am hoping you might get some ideas, just like you, I am still putting my thoughts together. Good luck to you Susan and thank you for your post.

  2. Susann,
Parental involvement is a very important issue. I have witness the difference in the children I work with also. Often my parents are choosing their careers over time with their children and it affects many aspects of their development, particularly social skills. I like you am feeling overwhelmed by narrowing down my topic to a specific question, I wish you luck.

  3. Hi Susan,

Many times I have a hard time putting into words what I really want to say. Sometimes, I find myself writing just how I am thinking. However, I believe that we will all do just fine. Parent involvement is an important topic, because it is a big topic in early childhood. As early childhood educators try to teach young children and it is important that EC professionals and parents work together for the well-being of the child. EC professionals cannot do it all by themselves, but need the support and input of the parent or guardian. I really think that you have chosen a great topic to research.

  4. Susann,
I agree with my colleagues’ that parent involvement is an interesting topic because the positive impact it can have on healthy development. Have you considered the needs of parents of immigrants, dual language learners? I think we could use more research in these areas. I would also look at the different research on parent involvement; researchers will usually say where they believe future research is needed. Good luck, let me know when you decide on a topic, and I hope I can be useful.

  5. Susan,

Parental Involvement is important to the EC field and the future educational path that children will travel. Parental involvement help sets the tone for the child's view on education and their success. This could be a topic that would of interest to you. I hope that you will be able to narrow down on a topic and find various sources of credible information.
