I viewed the story of one former Head Start parent who was now A Head Start executive director! That was amazing. She was given opportunities to serve on the Head Start policy council and parent committee. These opportunities prepared her for her current role as executive director. She was learning about Head Start while serving in those capacities. She also talked about how Head Start staff encouraged her and reminded her that she could do anything she set out to do. Involving that parent in a goal setting process changed the life of that parent. She received an associates degree, a bachelor's degree and a Master's degree. This was a benefit to the parent but also to her children as she was better able to provide for them.
my opinion is Parent involvement is definitely an essential part for the early childhood field. Parents are their child's first and foremost teacher and that is a recipe for success when you mix home and school together! Parents that support classroom learning are a great tool for building academic success.
I found that story very amazing also. I really liked her statement that Head Start empowers parents for life! I truly believe that is exactly what Head Start can do for parents and families.
ReplyDeleteAmazing, Amazing story! I too work with several professionals that were Head Start parents and children. I am believer that the way that Head Start requires for parents to be involved is empowering. Just to hear the story of the parent that is not an executive director is proof enough for me.
ReplyDeleteSusann,
ReplyDeleteFrom the video, when parents get involved in their children learning , they contribute to their development socially, emotionally , and cognitively. We need to advocate more for parental involvement in schools.
You chose a great story Susann. I believe too that families are the most important element of the Head Start program second to the children themselves. Without parent involvement educating a young child can be difficult. When there is family involvement we as educators are also made aware of any differences in that families culture.
ReplyDeleteSusann,
ReplyDeleteI watched that story as well and was so inspired by her! It really made me feel like anything was possible if you keep pressing on. I completely agree with you that parent involvement is essential in the early childhood field. Actually, parent involvement is essential in all aspects of a child's life if you really think about it. I know that when one of my parent's would miss a ballet recital it would greatly hinder my performance. Children seek their parent's approval and when the parent is un-involved it really discourages the child and puts a damper on their success.
