Exploring Global Children's Initiative

I had to do the alternate assignment this week because I haven't heard from my contact in South Africa. He hasn't responded to my email this week. In looking at the website Global Children's initiative, I discovered

1. Other countries around the globe are facing the same issues we face in the United States. Such as poverty, hindering the learning process.

2. I also see that other countries have the holistic approach to child development. This is what I pulled from one part of the website.

"Much progress is needed to successfully raise the commitment to an integrated approach to early childhood health and development in global and national policy circles. A particular challenge in this area is the multidisciplinary nature of comprehensive approaches that bring together all the domains of child development."

Child Health is very important in the development of children.

3. Here is another thing that I found similar. The effect of stress on the children around the world is a growing issue as well. The following is another interesting point that I felt I should share.
"Healthy social and emotional development can be derailed in early childhood by a wide range of stressors and environmental influences interacting with genetic predispositions. Indeed, the foundations of many mental health problems that endure through adulthood are established early in life. In some cases, significant impairments in mental health that occur in young children can have serious consequences for early learning, social competence, and lifelong health."

I enjoyed being able to see training opportunities on the site. I also subscribed to the newsletter and events that are being held at Harvard.

  1. Hey Susann
I have to say that your findings are very interesting. I especially like the information your shared on the importance of a healthy social and emotional development and how it can be derailed in early childhood due to wide range of stressor and enviromental influences. I feel alot of adults really dont believe that children also goes through their own version on stress and it is up to adults to elimitate as they are growning and developing.

  2. Hi Susann,
You found some really great information! It's wonderful that there is more emphasis on a holistic approach to child development, especially on healthy social/emotional development. I agree with Ms. Rena above, this area is one that is not really focused on but it has such a big impact on a child's development, experiences, and impacts them later in life as well. Thanks for sharing what you found!

  3. Hey Susann,
I was very impressed with the things I learned this week. I didn't know that other coutries around the world kids developed mainly the same way as the ones in the United States. I was thinking to myself that my Pre-K kids are easy to communidate with, but other countries seem to be having quite a long time with communication with the kids near them.

  4. It is scary to think of the toxic affect that the world around young children can have on them even as adults. Hopefully as researh is brought to the fore front, policies will be made worldwide to save the future of the world.

  5. Susann,
You provided great information about what children are going through in other parts of the world.I read similar thing about the brain on the Harvard website. We need to provide environment that is safe, conducive and secured for the children in other for them to learn , grow , develop cognitively and emotionally . If Children are exposed to situations that produce fear early in life , the fear can affect them later in life and have negative impact on their development.
